On 30 April 2025, the new regulation titled “The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) (Amendment) Regulations 2025” was laid in the UK Parliament and come into force on 30 October 2025.
The original Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations, first introduced in 1988 and subsequently amended over the years, establish the flammability requirements for upholstered furniture intended for domestic use and sold throughout the United Kingdom.
These are the changes introduced by the new amendment must be adhered to from October 30 2025:
- removal of certain baby and young children’s products from scope of the regulations;
- removal of the requirement to affix the “display label” to new products;
- extension from 6 to 12 months of the time limit for instituting legal proceedings.
It is important to note that there are no changes to the requirements or test methods, which remain unchanged. This means that, in terms of material and composite classification, nothing has been modified.
