CATAS QUALITY AWARD

Since 1993 CATAS operates as a product certification body through its own brand CATAS QUALITY AWARD (CQA).

Compared to the laboratory test carried out only on one sample selected by the customer, the product certification extends its valence to an entire production and, consequently, to the production process from which it derives.

The CQA certification schemes that we offer to our clients are developed on the basis of our long experience in this industrial sector and are constantly updated in consequence of possible changes introduced by the technical standards.

For every company interested in our product certification scheme, we define an annual program of systematic controls that allows us to continuously check the product performance, through:

  • CATAS controls: during the year our technicians randomly perform sampling activities at the company warehouse. Such samples are then tested in our laboratories accordingly to each specific certification rules.
  • Internal control by the company: the same company is committed to carry out regular internal tests, which results shall be sent to CATAS.

The granting of the CATAS QUALITY AWARD - CQA represents an important added value to the certified product as it states its conformity over time to specific technical requirements.

The certification schemes presently active are the following:

Formaldehyde E1

This certification scheme concerns the formaldehyde emission from raw or coated wood based panels. The certification is granted to productions compliant to the E1 classification as defined by European Standards in force.

The certification scheme

For the granting and maintenance of this product certification, CATAS technicians visit twice a year the company warehouses where they collect the certificated products. Subsequently, the collected samples are analysed in the CATAS laboratory. Moreover the company periodically carry out internal control tests for every certified product. The results of this internal control must be sent to our reference technicians for the final approval.

Formaldehyde CARB

This certification scheme applies to raw wood-based panels and certifies their compliance with the low formaldehyde emission requirements defined by the governmental agency CARB and mandatory for the import of such materials in California.

CATAS is the first Italian institute to have been recognized by CARB (California Air Resource Board) as a third party certifier (TPC n ° 16). This product certification scheme is also subject to accreditation by ACCREDIA in accordance with ISO/IEC 17065.

Go to the list of TPC: http://www.arb.ca.gov/toxics/compwood/listoftpcs.htm

The certification scheme

During the year CATAS carries out four audits in the company to verify the production and to sample the products for the following analysis. In parallel the company performs periodic tests and reports the results to CATAS. Compliance is assessed by considering both the requirements defined by CARB in the Final Regulation Order ATCM §93120 and the additional requirements of the CQA scheme, being subject of accreditation.

Formaldehyde 4 STARS

This certification applies to raw or coated wood based panels and certifies that they meet the Japanese requirements on formaldehyde emission of building products.

Compliance is verified considering the Japanese and the European standards.

Coating systems for exterior wood

This certification applies to all wood coating systems intended to be used for the protection of wood in outdoor environments. The coating systems are subjected to various tests including the natural weathering and others that serve to evaluate some intrinsic properties of the coatings (elasticity, effectiveness against biological attacks, applicability, etc.). The test methods and the requirements are those provided by the relevant European standards (EN 927) to which some tests deriving from CATAS experiences of and from some certification schemes recognized and well-consolidated in some European countries, are added.

The certification scheme

CATAS regularly visits companies for the annual inspection and for the sampling of the certified products. Coatings are then applied and subjected to established laboratory testing. The main test is represented by the natural weathering which normal exposure period of one year is extended to two years to obtain the further recognition called “PLUS”. The company also carries out an internal control according to the certification rules for each certified coating system which results are sent to CATAS twice a year.

Coating systems for domestic furniture

The certification applies to coating systems for domestic furniture. There are three different final-use classes depending on the performance requirements of the certification scheme:

  • Coating systems for kitchen cabinets
  • Coating systems for bathroom furniture
  • Coating systems for bedroom and living room furniture.

The requirements provide also a distinction between horizontal and vertical surfaces, assuming that the former are mostly stressed than the latter.

The certification scheme

CATAS regularly visits companies for the annual inspection and for the sampling of the certified products. Coatings are then applied and subjected to established laboratory testing. Compliance is verified considering international (ISO), European (EN) and national (UNI) standards covering the surfaces of domestic furniture. In addition there are also internal procedures deriving from the experience of CATAS and some legal requirements on the safety of these products for the end users.

The company also carries out an internal control according to the certification rules for each certified coating system which results are sent to CATAS twice a year.

Wood stains for exterior wood

This scheme certifies wood stains for exterior wood and is divided into two categories: semi-stable and stable. Stains belonging to the "stable" class are suitable to protect wood from moisture exchanges with the environment and then reducing the dimensional variations that are consequent to these variations. These stains are therefore suitable for wood articles where the dimensional stability is particularly important (e.g. window frames). Wood stains of the the semi-stable category are less effective in this respect but nevertheless they offer greater ease-to-use and regular maintenance.

Certification is therefore useful to differentiate this category of products for the protection of wood exposed outdoors.

The certification scheme

CATAS regularly visits companies for the annual inspection and for the sampling of the certified products that are subject to the testing protocol. Furthermore, the company carries out an internal control for each type of certified product and send a monthly sampling, rotating the certified wood species, to CATAS for the execution of some specific tests. The conformity of the products is verified considering European standards (EN) and some specific internal technical procedures deriving from the CATAS experience as well as some mandatory rules regarding the safety of these products.

Glue lam beams for window frames

The certification applies to laminated wood profiles for the production of windows frames and certifies the production consistency in relation to the quality of wood used, the bonding performance and the profile composition.

The certification scheme

CATAS regularly visits companies for the annual inspection and for the sampling of the certified products. Furthermore, the company carries out an internal control for each type of certified product and send a monthly sampling, rotating the certified wood species, to CATAS for the execution of some specific tests.

The conformity of the product is verified considering European standards (EN) and some specific internal technical procedures deriving from the Catas experience.

Playground equipment

This certification is granted to playground equipment. It certifies the consistency of the production in relation to the performance and safety requirements of these products. A single certificate is provided for all different playground equipment for which the individual company has obtained the certification.

The certification scheme

CATAS annually inspects the company warehouses or directly a park where the equipment is installed. During the inspection, the dimensional requirements are verified and load tests on a part of the composition or on the whole game equipment are carried out. In addition, the company carries out regular internal control over the size of each type of product certified. The conformity of the product is verified according to European standards (EN) and CATAS internal procedures.

Besides those presented above, other schemes derive from the joint certification CATAS - WKI (being the result of a strict and fruitful collaboration we have in place for many years with the Fraunhofer Institute WKI in Braunschweig (Germany):

CATAS WKI PREMIUM and PREMIUM PLUS - coating systems for exterior wood

This certification applies to all wood coating systems intended to be used for the protection of wood in outdoor environments. The coating systems are primarily subjected to the natural weathering which is carried out both at CATAS site (Italy) and at the site of WKI-Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research (Germany)

In addition some other tests are carried out to assess some intrinsic properties of the coatings (elasticity, effectiveness against biological attacks, applicability, etc.). The test methods and the requirements are those provided by the relevant European standards (EN 927) to which some tests deriving from the experiences of the two Institutes (CATAS and WKI) and from some certification schemes recognized and well-consolidated in some European countries.

The certification scheme

CATAS regularly visits companies for the annual inspection and for the sampling of the certified products. Coatings are then applied and subjected to established laboratory testing. The main test is represented by the natural weathering (carried out in Italy and Germany at the same time) which normal exposure period of one year is extended to two years to obtain the further recognition called “PLUS”. The company also carries out an internal control according to the certification rules for each certified coating system which results are sent to CATAS twice a year.

In 2014, CATAS was the first Italian product certification body to be accredited according to UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 17065 for the product certification scheme Formaldehyde CARB.

In order to ensure the complete reliability of the certification, a specific Committee for the Safeguarding of the Independence and Impartiality supervises the CATAS certification activities. This committee is formed by qualified representatives of the Universities, Public Bodies, Consumer Associations and Industrial Associations.
