Fire reaction tests

The Fire Department carries out fire reaction tests in order to evaluate how materials react when exposed to fire under certain conditions.

The fire reaction tests are not to be confused with the fire resistance tests by which the resistance of a product (wall, ceiling, column, beam, fire door) is evaluated in terms of time.

By our testing equipment we are able to classify products according to the fire reaction test methods related to:

  • Italian standards (UNI);
  • European standards (EN), limited to upholstered furniture;
  • Other countries standards (i.e.: standards BS, IMO, Technical Bulletin 117), limited to upholstered furniture.

Experience and specialization: the standardization activities.

Our strength lies in people: CATAS technicians contribute to the standardization at national level (UNI), by participating to the Working Group " Fire Reaction ", Commission "Combustion behavior".

The products we can test:

  • COVERS
  • UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE
  • MATTRESSES
  • PILLOWS
  • UPHOLSTERED BEDS
  • NOT UPHOLSTERED CHAIRS
  • WALLS AND WALLS COVERS
  • FLOORS AND RAISED ACCESS FLOORS
  • SUSPENDED CEILINGS AND CEILING COVERS

Since 2000 CATAS is authorized by the Italian Home Office to issue test certificates for the fire reaction sector necessary to obtain the ministerial homologation.

Our lab technicians are available to further explanations or requests about tests on different types of products.

Visit the Fire Prevention page to download all the documents issued by the Italian Home Office (in Italian language) on the topic.
