CAM criteria and Green Public Procurement

CATAS has been invited at the working table on the application of CAM (Italian environmental minimum criteria) in the wood and furniture sector,m set up by the Central Directorate for Environmental Protection, Energy and Sustainable Development of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region.

The working groups are introduced by the European project GPP STREAM - Green Public Procurement and Sustainability Tools for Resource Efficiency Mainstreaming, which aims to integrate public tenders for the supply of interior furnishings in programs financed by European funds and in other plans and programs at national, regional and local levels.
The aim is to ensure that public spending is oriented towards products, services and supplies with a low environmental impact and with an efficient use of resources during their "life cycle". The project is funded by the Interreg Europe program and in addition to the Autonomous Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, which is the lead partner, the Ecosistemi Foundation and the Lazio Region (Italy), the Ministry of Environment and the North-East Regional Development Agency (Romania), the Municipality of Gabrovo and the Center for Sustainability and Economic Growt (Bulgaria), the Association of Municipalities of the Ribera Alta Region (Spain) and the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes Energy Environment (France) are also involved.

But what are the effective goals of the project? The environmental minimum criteria CAM are already a consolidated asset of the public tenders: now it is necessary to evaluate the improvement of their management and implementation by integrating the possible tools that can be used by the Public Administrations, also through the different levels of government and introducing green purchasing practices that flank the existing CAMs.

Catas, which carries out the chemical and technical assessments required by the related CAMs, will contribute to the wood and furniture sector working table, by highlighting the difficulties that have emerged both for from the contracting authorities and for from the furniture manufacturers interested in the contract.
