Last December 2023, CEN made available the new
EN 1177:2018+A1:2023 for all European Countries.
This new document clarified some aspects of the verification according to
method 2 on-site, also putting the necessary information in order.
The method for carrying out the test on products consisting of
more than one component (for example artificial turf with infill on shock pad) has been modified: now the surface is impacted in the same point for all the 4 impacts (minimum), for each position.
As information that shall be included in the test report according to method 1 in the laboratory and on-site, it is
no necessary to declare the
uncertainty of the measurement that accompanies the critical fall height.
In the previous document this uncertainty was ± 7% and derived from a round robin carried out in 2011.
However, each laboratory internally verifies and calculates its own uncertainty by evaluating all the contributions.
Lastly, an informative annex,
Annex G, has been added, which summarizes the history of HIC testing of impact attenuating surfaces for playgrounds and variations in test results.
CATAS has been carrying out tests according to this standard for some years and is also accredited for the current version of the standard. As always, we are available for clarifications and further information.
