The list of harmonized standards for the purposes of the GPSD Directive on general product safety (Directive 2001/95 / EC) has been recently updated. The most important news concern the children's furniture sector.
Before the news ... just a quick remind on the meaning of "harmonized standard" and GPSD Directive.The GPSD Directive on general product safety is the regulatory tool with which the European Union establishes a (general) obligation on the safety of consumer products placed on the market and which also applies to furniture products
(*).
A harmonized standard is a technical standard that is draft on a
specific mandate from the European Commission, which verifies its requirements. Compliance with this type of standard gives
presumption of conformity with the relevant Directive, which for furniture is precisely the GPSD Directive. The CE marking
(*) is not required for products covered by this directive.
(*) The following are currently an exception and therefore fall within the mandatory CE marking: electrified furniture (scope of application of Machinery Directive 2006/42 / EC and Directive 2014/30 / EU Electromagnetic Compatibility), medical devices, i.e. medical beds (scope of application of the Medical Devices Directive and the new MDR Regulation (EU) 2017/745) construction products, i.e. products permanently incorporated into the building (eg: ceilings, floors, beams, ...) (scope of application of EU Regulation 305/2011).Coming back to the news ...As of 16/08/2022 the "presumption of conformity" with the GPSD Directive is recognized for the following new standards:
- EN 716-1:2017+AC:2019 Children’s cots for domestic use – Safety requirements
- EN 1130:2019/AC:2020 Cribs – Safety requirements and test method
- EN 14988:2017+A1:2020 Children’s highchair - Safety requirements and test method
We would like to remind you that the following harmonized standards have also been in force for some time as far as children's furniture:
- EN 12221-1:2008+A1:2013 and EN 12221-2:2008+A1:2013 Changing unit for domestic use – Safety requirements and test method (presumption of safety starting from 09/10/2015)
- EN 16890:2017 Children’s mattresses (presumption of safety starting from 01/12/2020).
