Talking about plastic, the global trend is to move more and more towards a
"plastic free" society, reducing the use of plastic and its impact on the environment.
In Italy on January 2022 the
Legislative Decree n. 196 entered into force, implementing the
European Directive 2019/904 "SUP" on Single-Use Plastic, a category of products that too often end up polluting the environment, especially seas and beaches.
It is estimated that 2 to 5% of the plastic produced ends up in the oceans, which disintegrates and gives rise to microplastics, one of the greatest problems that afflicts every terrestrial ecosystems. Moreover, more than 80% of marine litter found on European beaches is made up of plastic and at least 50% of these are single-use plastic items.
Furthermore we must not forget that the big problem of plastic concerns
both its production and its disposal: it is estimated that 90% of plastic comes from virgin fossil fuels and that, in Europe, only 31% of plastic is recycled, while 42% of plastic waste are subjected to incineration and 27 % are placed in landfills.
What can CATAS do together with its customers?
In 2021, 19800 kg of mixed packaging (shrink wrap, strapping, polyurethane, padding, polystyrene, ...) were produced in Catas. Among these, a considerable amount comes from the packaging of the samples received, which are too often wrapped in layers and layers of plastic. The purpose of protecting the sample from damages which may occur during handling and transportation can also be achieved
by using paper and cardboard, materials that are more likely to be recycled and which are rarely dispersed into the environment.
So why not lend a hand, to Catas and above all to the Environment in general, by reducing - or better stopping - the wrapping samples in plastic?
Let's think about it!
