Few weeks ago, the new standard UNI EN ISO 9227:2023
“Corrosion tests in artificial atmospheres. Salt spray tests” was published.
The new version
does not substantially change the previous withdrawn standard dated 2017.
The updates concern procedural aspects only, that the laboratory is required to comply with, such as the arrangement of the specimens inside the chamber, the internal control systems and some details concerning the equipment calibration.
The method is suitable for measuring the resistance to the effects of corrosion of metallic materials, whether covered by galvanic treatments or protected by organic coating. The items most subjected to this test at Catas are both indoor and outdoor furniture components of chairs, tables, handles, draining boards and so on. Sometimes, however, we also receive testing requests from the nautical, construction, automotive, buildings and other sectors.
Recently, this standard has been referred to in the
Minimum Environmental Criteria - CAM.
It is part of a
mandatory requirement to be submitted when participating in Italian public tenders, e.g. for the supply of office furniture or school furniture such as tables, chairs and storage furniture.
For this purpose, a very useful tool for the correct compilation of tender specifications are represented by the following two standards, also recently published:
- UNI/TR 11653:2020 "Office furniture - Standard technical specifications for the supply of office seating".
- UNI/TR 11654:2020 "Office furniture - Standard technical specifications for the supply of office desks and tables, office storage furniture and screens".
These two documents prescribe a minimum performance of the articles when subject to the salt spray test as described below:
- Painted metal components, no visible defects after 24 hours of exposure;
- Metallic components with galvanic coating, no visible defects after 16 hours of exposure.
Catas has been carrying out neutral salt spray corrosion tests (NSS) for over 50 years now and
since 1991 the method has been accredited by Accredia (previously SINAL) according to the UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard with accreditation number 0027, making CATAS
one of the first accredited laboratory in Italy.For information: Claudio Caon
